When Is The Best Time To End An eBay Auction?

When Is The Best Time To End An eBay Auction? post image

Choosing the best time to end an eBay auction can make or break your profit margins when selling on eBay. Most eBay auctions typically attract the most bids as the auction is ending so timing is everything! Generally speaking, the best time to end an eBay auction is on a Sunday night between 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM EST. This doesn’t mean however that there aren’t plenty of other great days and times to have your eBay auction end. In fact, some products such as office supplies will sell for more money on eBay if the auction ends on a business day during normal business hours. Although blog postings regarding the best time to end an eBay auction are nothing new, I thought that I might provide some more granular suggestions based upon my personal experiences with items that I have sold on eBay.

Consumer Electronics (Including Home Computers, Video Games, TV’s, etc…)

I frequently sell my video games on eBay once I have completed them and have found that the best time to end auctions for video games are Monday – Thursday between 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM EST. You can also safely end an eBay auction for video games anytime on Saturday or Sunday, but steer clear of Friday! The reason being is that teenagers are by far the largest consumer of video games. Most teenagers are home on weeknights and are in many cases online instead of doing homework. Saturday and Sunday are also great choices especially considering that many teens who don’t have a part time job or a means of transportation will be at home and online. Friday is a definite no-no because of school activities such as sports and dances. Having said all of this, a hot new and in demand video game system (think Wii back in 07/08) can be sold on eBay for a premium at ANY time.

Other consumer electronics such as home computers and flat-screen TV’s will fetch the most money on eBay if you end your auction on a Saturday or Sunday. I’ve also had good luck ending eBay auctions for consumer electronics on Monday mornings which I tend to attribute to office workers who are finishing up a little weekend shopping before settling into their work week.

Office Supplies (Including Computer Equipment For Business Use)

If you are selling office supplies on eBay including computer equipment for business use then your best bet is to have your auction end during normal business hours. When I sell office supplies on eBay, I have had the best luck ending my eBay auctions Monday – Thursday 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM EST. Monday in particular seems to yield the highest profits, while I won’t even attempt to have an auction end on Friday as many office employees either have flex time (meaning that they can leave work early on Friday) or quite simply put; are more focused on the weekend and less focused on their job at the company.

Collectibles (Including Antiques & Baseball Cards)

When selling collectibles on eBay such as baseball cards I have found that the best time to have the auction end is in fact on a Sunday night between 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM EST. I have also had good luck ending eBay auctions for collectibles on Saturday night between 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM EST. That being said, if you have an item for sale that is a highly sought after collectible then you’ll probably do well enough having your eBay auction end during ANY normal waking hour.

Clothing

When it comes to ending an eBay auction for clothing you really can’t go wrong with having your auction end on a Sunday between 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM EST. Don’t be too quick to decide against ending your clothing auctions during the work week however! Purchasing clothing online is quick and easy so many office employees will take the time to do a little online shopping during their lunch break which could lead to extra money in your pocket.

General Guidelines For The Best Time To End An eBay Auction

I’ve given you some specific examples of when I end my eBay auctions based upon my experiences with the product that I sell. Here’s some general guidelines pertaining to the best time to end an eBay auction that will apply to the majority of the products that get sold on eBay.

  • Generally speaking, the best time to end an eBay auction is on a Sunday between 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM.
  • Avoid ending your eBay auction on a holiday because most people will either be travelling or too preoccupied with holiday related activities to even consider going on eBay.
  • Make sure that you end your auction during “normal” waking hours. Although eBay auctions literally end every minute, I for one am never online at 3:00 AM.
  • If you have a hot, grey market item, such as the Nintendo Wii was, and like the Nintendo 3DS soon will be, then anytime is a good time to have your eBay auction end. Parents in this country can’t say ‘No’ to their children especially when it comes to those “must have” toys and video games.
  • Consider ending your eBay auction at an odd time interval such as 8:33 PM EST. This might help you to pickup a sale from a buyer who didn’t win somebody else’s auction that ended at 8:30 PM.

PayPal will send you a 1099-K form if you have received over 200 payments and made more than $20,000.

Mate, thank you for the info, very informative; but, could you please tell me, if the money earned on eBay through an auction, it is taxable as a normal sale and reportable to the IRS.
Thank you for you time and attention.
