I found the following article on MSNBC this morning which states that roughly 40% of American homes do not have broadband Internet access. These statistics, as released by the Commerce Department, point to rural communities as being the most under served. The reason being is that the cost of upgrading to high speed Internet access that would be incurred by phone and cable companies is not justifiable due to the relatively small subscriber base in many of these rural communities.
